Top Golf is coming to Greensboro

At the Greensboro City Council meeting on Tuesday, July 19, Director of Greensboro Water Resources Mike Borchers made an unexpected announcement: Top Golf is coming to Greensboro.

One of the last things on the City Council’s agenda was a resolution that gave the city manager permission to sign a reimbursement agreement for an unnamed attraction for the construction of certain sewer improvements, including a proposed eight-inch public utility line extension with encasement underneath. It’s not often that the water resources director gets to make a much-anticipated economic development announcement.

Additionally, an unnamed attraction was mentioned in the real resolution.

The 30-acre lot that is bordered by I-40, Bridford Parkway, and Guilford College Road will receive a sewer connection through a sewer extension beneath Bridford Parkway thanks to a partnership between Reality Link Development and authorities of Greensboro. By doing that, they are, of course, opening up the entire tract to the provision of utility services. Top Golf will serve as an anchor for a portion of this development, but the water and sewer extension will also help out parcels.

Top Golf will use about eight acres of the 32-acre site, according to Nathan Duggins of the Tuggle Duggins legal firm, which is representing Reality Link Development. A hotel, as well as several indoor entertainment venues and other enterprises, were also planned for the area, he continued.

Justin Outling, who is running for mayor and is on the city council, was unhappy that Top Golf was added so late. It’s important to keep in mind, though, that for us, we’re using community dollars to support projects, and going forward, I think balancing the business interests with the need for transparency would make it ideal for the public to have the information sooner. He said he understood the reasons why a company buying land didn’t want to be named.

There is a cool factor with Top Golf, just as there is a cool factor with Trader Joe’s and with places that can attract those kinds of enterprises, according to city council member Nancy Hoffmann.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan claimed that, despite not being a golfer, she had a great time at a Top Golf event in Charlotte. She said that the project had been going on since 2019 and that the money for the sewer line was not a typical way to get money. This will benefit that area, she said. It will benefit new arrivals as well as other folks. It applies to more sources than just this one.

According to the contract, the reimbursement must be less than $400,000 and cannot be more than $500,000.

This will be a great opportunity for hoteliers to start their hotels and pet-friendly hotels in Greensboro. Visitors can also take the liberty to book hotels near PTI airport in Greensboro NC or hotels near the world furniture market in Greensboro so they can explore the city and visit Top Golf.
